I have long had an attraction to doors and windows as a subject matter. I thought it was time to pull some old photos out from my original inspiration and follow with some newer photos that I have taken through the years. It is interesting to me to see themes and groups appear but trying to organize them and give order is much harder!
My original inspiration was a series of doors on the food service buildings at the NC State Fairgrounds in Raleigh, North Carolina, where I lived at the time.
I started to see and shoot similar doors with bold colors and graphic shapes as I traveled around North Carolina.
Bisbee, Arizona is an artist colony of sorts and was a great place for funky and interesting photos of all kinds.
All the following photos were shot there.
When choosing photos, It’s hard to decide on focusing on the door as the subject or the larger store front when it is so visually interesting!
Doors made with planks and with an old west feel.
Depression era housing carved into sandstone in the southwest desert.
The “Bone Building” in Skagway, Alaska
The first 3 photos are of the Cool Springs Mobil Station, a fixture on Route 66. I found additional images from other places with lots of stickers and the same look.
Wonderful pics – my favorites are the German castle Wall – the great diagonals of the ivy and the big double red wooden doors with their side lights – the reflections in the windows of the door make it seem like a kinda magical portal – mystery as to what’s inside – of course, it says “closed” to you…
Jimmie, these are WONDERFUL!!
