Alpine, Texas is where I started my Big Bend adventure and where I finished. I really enjoyed this little town and met many good people here. I hope you enjoy a sample of what Alpine has to offer! It has a large number of murals around town commemorating its history and some that are simply colorful works of art. You can see a related video on my YouTube channel.

This mural is a virtual menu of everything Alpine has to offer visitors.
Murphy street was the artist block in town. It was lined with galleries and was home to Tom Curry’s studio which I should have photographed bud didn’t understand the significance at the time, he was the local famous artist.
A 1966 BMW motorcycle, the owner didn’t want to be photographed. He rides around town with his Basset Hound in the side car. I wish I could have caught him coming down the road with the dogs ears flapping in the wind. That would have been a sight!
Every town seems to have a caboose or steam engine on display as part of their railroad heritage.
Another common thing in the west is to put letters on the mountains to indicate where you are? This is Sul Ross State University. On another hill is an A for Alpine. I wish I knew more about this – was it for planes before radar, satellite mapping?
I love finding what you might call religious folk art.
I tried to find a road up the side of the mountain but was met by locked gates and no trespassing signs.
Another view from the highway.
