After visiting Caprock Canyons State Park and Palo Duro Canyon State Park, I visited a few more landmarks east of Amarillo before heading north on my trek to Colorado for the summer.
Moving north from Amarillo, Texas, I stop in Dalhart, Texas as I continue my trek out of Texas to The Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado.
While staying in Dalhart, I took a day trip north to explore the Rita Blanca National Grasslands. I expected miles of tall grass like the bison and Indians experienced but was disappointed to find it was all farmland and cattle ranches.
Next stop was Clayton, New Mexico. My excitement for finally getting out of Texas after 6 months of travel was short lived when I find that New Mexico was still operating in total shutdown mode for the pandemic.
Northeast of Clayton, New Mexico is the intersection of Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma, where we find the Northwestern corner of Texas and the Tri-State Monument….little more than a concrete pillar.
The Tri-State Marker in a cow pasture.
Continuing Northwest on Highway 412-64-56 from the Northwest corner of Texas, You come to the New Mexico , Oklahoma border.
Northwest of Clayton is the Clayton Lake State Park and Dinosaur Trackways. You can see detailed video of the dinosaur tracks on my YouTube channel here!
Leaving Clayton for my next stop along the way is Capulin Volcano National Monument.
My next stop was Raton, New Mexico where I spent the night. This is the view from Goat Mountain.
I finally make it to Colorado and I’m greeted by snow capped mountains and a beautiful place to park in the desert near the Great Sand Dunes National Park!
